The reduction in the use of antibiotics, the rapid expansion of health alerts and the consequent consumer concern about food safety and animal welfare, as well as new emerging pathologies, require comprehensive biosecurity programs to ensure the absence of pathogenic microorganisms in food.

Feed is one of the main routes of transmission of microorganisms. Bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli or Campylobacter, fungi or viruses can contaminate food and cause serious consequences in all productive phases, affecting animal health and performance and putting public health at risk.

Currently, although heat treatment is the most common to reduce Salmonella, it is insufficient because of the risk of recontamination, becoming a source of contamination in feed.
